Calico Early Man Site

How long have people inhabited North America? The answer to that one is surprisingly contentious, with some folks saying "Not more than 10,000 years" and one early theory, put forward by none other that Louis Leakey that it might be as long as 200,000 years ago!

Well, 200,000 years is right out, but 20,000 years isn't – and the answer might be found here at Calico. This whole valley behind me used to be a lake and back then it was a mighty hospitable area teeming with fish and game and more materials for making points than you could shake a stick at.

And that's what folks used to do. The bentonite in the alluvial fans coming out from the hills has preserved thousands of specimens of artifacts (man-made) and geofacts (earth-made). Come out for a look (just outside Barstow) and keep an open mind.
